Can we bring a species back from extinction, and more importantly, should we?
📅 Friday, 4 July
⏰ 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM (AEST)
📍 Online via Zoom and on campus at the EM1 Lecture Theatre, Natural Resource Building (W055)
🎫 FREE- all welcome!
Whether you're a student, researcher, or simply curious about the future of conservation, join the UNE Zoology Society and UNE Geoscience Society for a thought-provoking panel discussion on de-extinction.
From dire wolves to wooly mice, bringing back the thylacine and the dodo, this topic is more prevalent than ever. We sit down with some leading experts on the topic to discuss not only the science of de-extinction, but the ethics of the process too.
If joining in person at the Armidale Campus, keep the conversation going after the panel with nibbles and drinks and the chance to meet one on one with panellist Dr Tommy Leung!
Online attendees will receive the link to the Zoom meeting the week of the event.
🌟 Panellists:
Professor Andrew Pask (University of Melbourne) – head of the Thylacine Integrated Genomic Restoration Research (TIGRR) Laboratory
Dr Tommy Leung (UNE) – parasitologist and science communicator
Professor Mike Archer (UNSW)- palaeontologist and de-extinction researcher
Dr Nic Rawlence (University of Otago) – ancient DNA specialist and evolutionary biologist
